5년 전 월간디자인의 번역 일을 도우며 알게된 박은영 기자님의 새로운 책 #이렇게살아도괜찮아 에 나오는 15명 중 한 꼭지로 등장하게 되었습니다. 다채롭고 재미있는 분들의 이야기가 많이 등장해서 재미있고 좋네요. 불안하고 고민이 많겠지만, 자신만의 삶의 모습을 만들어가는 모든 분들을 응원합니다.
아프리카 아이들과 함께 보는 산수책 , 웰던프로젝트가 만든, Well Done Mathematics!를 소개합니다.
2000년, UN은 8가지 새천년 개발목표(MDGs) 중 하나로 2015년까지 전세계 보편적 초등교육의 실현을 꼽았습니다. 개발도상국 어린이들의 초등학교 입학률은 2005년 88%로 높아졌지만 교육의 빈부격차라는 문제는 여전히 남아있습니다. 웰던프로젝트의 젊은 아티스트들은 이 문제에 대해 우리가 할 수 있는 일은 무엇일까? 라고 고민하고 행동으로 옮겼습니다. 저희가 바라는 것은 단 하나, 어디에서 태어났는가에 상관없이 더 많은 아이들이 교육 기회를 얻고 즐겁게 공부하는 것입니다. 그리고 이는 여러분의 관심과 후원이 더해질때 비로소 가능합니다.
Well Done Mathematics!는 처음 숫자와 산수를 접하는 아이들을 위한 산수책입니다. 영어로 되어있지만 누구나 그림을 보며 쉽고 재미있게 공부할 수 있어요^_^ 기본 콘텐츠 구성과 책의 크기는 케냐와 탄자니아에서 쓰이는 초등학교 1학년 교과서를 기준으로 하여 만든 이야기가 있는 산수책입니다.

이 책은 한국의 디자이너, 선생님, 일러스트레이터, 번역가 등 10명이 넘는 순수한 개인들이 모여 만들고
텀블벅을 통한 크라우드 펀딩으로 인쇄 된 의미있는 책이랍니다. 그리고 한국과 탄자니아를 중심으로 책이 판매되고 있어요. 책의 수익은 다시 아이들을 위한 책을 만들거나 시설이 열악한 공립 초등학교의 식수탱크 및 펌프 등을 구입하고 짓는데에 사용됩니다.
지난 2월에는 EBS 지식채널e에서 <디디에와 축구를!> 이라는 제목으로 산수책 이야기가 소개되었습니다.
이야기가 눈에 쏙쏙 들어온답니다.
그럼 산수책의 각 챕터별 이야기를 소개합니다.
주인공은 디디에라는 이름의 축구를 좋아하는 남자아이와 디디에의 담임인 마리키 선생님이에요.
1장>> 디디에는 축구를 아주 좋아해요. 드록바와 같이 멋진 축구선수가 되는게 꿈이랍니다. 공부를 안하고 축구만 하는 디디에가 걱정된 선생님은 "1부터 9까지 모두 세게되면 축구공을 선물로 주마" 라고 제안하고 이에 디디에는 열심히 숫자공부를 해서 마침내 축구공을 받게됩니다. 그런데 너무 좋아 뻥! 찬 나머지 축구공이 우주로 날아가버려요!
2장>> 축구공을 찾아 우주로 간 디디에와 마리키선생님은 태양계에서 행성들을 보며 숫자의 순서를 공부하고 별을 가지고 한자리 수의 덧셈 뺄셈을 익힙니다. 하지만 또 다시 축구공은 지구로 떨어지고...
3장>> 지구로 돌아온 디디에는 자신이 사는 마을에 떨어진 축구공을 찾아 지구 끝에서부터 미로를 풀게됩니다. 이때 덤으로 삼각형, 사각형, 원에 대해서도 배우게 되지요.
4장>> 이윽고 마을에 밤이 찾아오고 수 많은 별들이 모습을 드러냅니다. 우주에서 보았던 별들이 지구에서는 또 다르게 보이네요. 선생님은 "어떤 별들은 이으면 특별한 이야기를 가진 별자리가 된단다" 하고 디디에가 상상의 나래를 펼칠 수 있도록 해주지요. 이 장에서는 두 자리 숫자에 대해 공부하게 됩니다.
5장>> 자~ 이제 축구공을 찾았으니 시합을 해야겠죠?! 기왕하는거 전 세계의 축구를 좋아하는 친구들을 불러 미니 월드컵을 해보아요! 6개의 대륙에서 99명의 친구들이 찾아왔어요~ 이 장에서는 두 자리 수의 덧셈 뺄셈을 공부하게 됩니다.
그림과 이야기를 통해 숫자 뿐 아니라 구별없이 차별없이, 누구든 함께 즐겁게 어울리는게 친구라는 것, 다양성에 대한 존중을 자연스럽게 익힐 수 있도록 신경쓴 챕터랍니다.
6장>> 자 이제 축구팀을 나누어 볼까요? 디디에는 친한 친구하고 팀을짜고 싶어하지만 마리키 선생님은 '키와 몸무게가 비슷한 친구들끼리 짝을 맞춰 공평하게 팀을 짜는게 어떻겠니?' 라고 제안을 합니다. 이에 디디에는 자연스럽게 친구들과 키와 몸무게를 비교하는 법을 배우게 돼요. 이 챕터는 평등함에 대해 생각할 수 있도록 기획되었습니다.
7장>> 이제 팀도 짰으니 축구 시합을 해 볼까요?? 그런데 축구 시합은 얼마나 하는거지? 45분!? 아직 어린 디디에에게 시간은 어렵고 낯설기만 합니다. 어떻게 하면 시간을 쉽고 재미있게 배울 수 있을까요? 디디에가 좋아하는 축구로 시간을 설명할 수 있을까요?
마리키 선생님과 모험을 함께하는 동안 축구 외에 공부에도 관심을 갖게 된 디디에. 디디에는 좀 더 많은 꿈에 대해 생각하게 되었고 훗날 아프리카를 더 좋은 곳으로 만드는 멋진 어른이 되었답니다. 어? 아프리카를 빛낸 인물에는 또 누가 있을까요??
책의 뒷면에는 그동안 후원해 주신 분들의 이름이 기재되었습니다. 2010년부터 다양한 방법으로 후원해주신 분들의 이름을 연인원방식으로 넣었습니다. 오랫동안 후원하신 분이라면 내 이름이 몇번이나 나오는지 세어보는 재미도 쏠쏠할것 같습니다.

현재 DDP에서 열리고 있는 <함께 36.5 디자인> 전시회에서 마지막 수량이 판매 되고있습니다.

웰던프로젝트 2014 마무리 특별기획

선생님, 디자이너, 일러스트레이터, 번역가 등 10여 명의 개인들이 순수하게 자발적으로 모여 만든 의미있는 도전, 아프리카 아이들을 위한 산수책<Well Done Mathematics!>의 출판을 위한 자금을 모으기 위해 텀블벅에 이야기를 올린지 벌써 약 1년이 되었습니다. 생각보다 더욱 많은 분들이 도와주신 덕에 책이 무사히 나왔고 아프리카에 책을 들고가 실제 판매도 해보고 남은 수익으로 초등학교 두곳의 식수탱크를 보수하기도 하였습니다. 책을 접한 선생님, 학부모, 그리고 학생들의 반응은 예상한것보다도 훨씬 뜨거웠고, 보다 나은 교육을 향한 이들의 관심과 필요를 확실히 느끼며 돌아올 수 있었습니다.
하지만 네트워크, 재원 등 모든것이 부족한 상황에서 저희의 힘만으로는 이 책이 탄생하게 된 이유가 되었던 <보다 많은 아이들에게 양질의 교육의 기회를 주자> 라는 목표를 이루기에 역부족이기에 프로젝트의 모두가 함께 머리를 싸매고 많은 고민을 해왔습니다. 무엇보다도 이 '배포'라는 문제 해결을 위해 여러 곳에 연락을 해 보던 중 서아프리카 기니의 Ganndal 출판사와 연락이 닿게되었고, 지난 5월 알리우 소우 대표를 서울에서 만나 협력을 맺기로 하였습니다.
그런데 Ganndal 출판사는 프랑스어를 사용하는 서아프리카 지역에서 사업을 펼치고 있기에 책을 프랑스어로 번역을 해야했습니다. 이에 선뜻 응해주신 프랑스의 재능기부자 분들의 도움으로 번역을 마칠 수 있었고, 내년 초 기니에 책이 도착하는 것을 목표로 함께 교정 작업을 진행 중입니다.
후원자 여러분들이 모아주신 소중한 돈으로 제작되는 책인 만큼 웰던프로젝트와 함께 아프리카판을 출판하는 Ganndal 출판사가 어떤 곳인지, 아프리카 교육 관계자가 생각하는 문제점과 <Well Done Mathematics!>가 어떤 역할을 할 수 있을지 등에 대한 이야기를 전하기 위해 알리우 소우(Aliou Sow) 대표와 인터뷰를 가져 보았습니다. 웰던프로젝트와 아프리카 교육 문제에 관심있는 분들에게 좋은 자료가 되었으면 합니다.

1. 알리우 대표님, 먼저 자기 소개와 어떻게 출판업계에서 일하게 되었는지 말씀 해 주세요. How you have started to work in this field?
안녕하세요, 저는 알리우 소우 (Aliou Sow) 라고 합니다. 현재 기니에 있는 Ganndal 출판사(Le Editions Ganndal)의 대표를 맡고 있습니다.
제가 학교 교사로 재직할 당시 기니를 비롯한 여러 아프리카 국가들에는 책과 교재가 부족한 상태였는데 저는 이것이 큰 문제라고 생각했습니다. 그 후 기니 국립교육원에서 학생 및 교사용 교재 개발을 담당하기도 하는 등 여러 직책을 거치며 교육 자료 부족에 기여할 방법을 고민해오다 직접 교육도서를 출판하는 출판사를 설립하기로 마음 먹게 되었습니다. 이것이 제가 Ganndal 출판사를 설립한 계기입니다.
As a former teacher in a secondary school, I quickly realized the big problem related to lack of books and other learning materials in my country and others in Africa. In addition to that, I hold many positions as responsible for textbooks and learning materials development for students and teachers at the National Pedagogical Institute of Guinea. As a result, I finally decided to contribute personally to overcome that big issue by becoming myself a publisher of educational books. This is how I created this Company called “Les Editions Ganndal.”
2. Ganndal 출판사에 대해 자세한 설명 부탁드립니다. Please tell us about Editions Ganndal
Ganndal은 1992년에 설립된, 기니에서 가장 오래된 교육 전문 출판사입니다. ‘Ganndal’ 이라는 단어는 아프리카 서부와 중부에서 사용되는 언어인 풀라어(Pular)로 ‘교육’, ‘지식’, ‘문화’ 등 책에 담겨야 할 모든 것을 일컫는 말입니다. 현재 Ganndal은 450종의 도서를 발행 중인데, 아동용 도서가 가장 많고 다음으로 교과서, 일반도서, 기니 토착언어로 된 출판물 순입니다. Ganndal은 아프리카는 물론 다른 여러 나라의 출판사, 서점, 서적유통회사 등을 파트너로 하는 넓은 네트워크를 갖고 프랑스어권 아프리카 출판사들을 선도하고 있으며, 어린이 도서 및 교과서의 공동출판에 관한 열린 정책을 펴고 있습니다.
주요 사업 지역은 기니 및 인접 프랑스어권 국가인 세네갈, 말리, 코트디부아르, 베넹, 토고, 니제르와 부르키나파소 등 이며, 프랑스에 기반을 둔 에이전시를 통해 유럽에서도 사업을 펼치고 있습니다.
Editions Ganndal is the oldest working educational publisher in Guinea, created since 1992. The word “Ganndal” means in my mother tongue, Pular, one of the biggest African spoken languages in the west and central Africa: education, knowledge, culture… in all everything that books are supposed to carry on. Nowadays, Editions Ganndal has more than 450 titles in its publications catalog. Most of them are children books, then textbooks, then general books and publications in Guinean local languages. Ganndal has a good reputation among the francophone African publishers as it acts like one the leaders both politically and technically. It has a large network of partners in Africa and around many other countries, including publishers, booksellers, and distributors.
Editions Gandal is well known because of its open policy of co-publication mainly in the fields of Children books and textbooks. This may explain our open mind shown to Well Done Project during our last professional trip to Korea.
3. Ganndal출판사 대표직 말고 다른 직책도 맡고 계신게 있나요? Do you have any other job or business besides being a CEO at Ganndal at the moment?
저는 수년간 아프리카 46개국의 출판협회들이 모여 조성한 아프리카 출판네트워크(APNET)의 회장을 역임했습니다. 현재도 아프리카 내외의 많은 전문기구들과 출판사들, 교육 NGO등 관련분야 다양한 단체의 경영 및 기술지원에 관여하고 있으며, 아프리카 교과서 보급과 관련된 국제 컨설팅 업무도 맡고 있습니다.
Knowing that I have been for many years the Chairman of the African Publishers Network (APNET), Organization gathering the National Publishers Associations of 46 African countries among the existing 52, it is worthy to note that I am still involved in the management and technical support of many professional Organizations of publishers, education NGOs, Stakeholders Unions, etc., across the Continent and some Internationally. Besides all of this, I am an International Consultant regarding issues of textbooks provision for Africa.
4. 유네스코(UNESCO)와도 협력 관계에 있으시다고 들었습니다. I think Ganndal is in cooperation with UNESCO. Could you tell me how it is being done or the details of activity?
네, Ganndal출판사는 유네스코와 수 년간 좋은 협력관계를 가져오고 있습니다. 기니 내 유네스코 출판물의 유통을 담당하여 서아프리카 지역의 평화교육을 위한 관련 도서들을 세네갈 다카르의 유네스코 사무소와 함께 출판하였습니다. Ganndal의 매니저는 유네스코 교과서 전문가 위원회의 회원이기도 합니다. 그 외에도 아동용 교재 개발과 아프리카 역사 도서 보급을 위해 유네스코와 협력 중입니다.
Editions Ganndal has a long tradition of good cooperation with Unesco. It has been for many years the distributor of Unesco publications in Guinea, it published a sub-regional title related to peace education in cooperation with the Unesco office in Dakar. In addition, the manager of Ganndal is a member of the Unesco textbooks experts Committee. In another hand we are collaborating with Unesco in some other areas like early childhood learning materials development and the possible wide distribution of the General History of Africa books.

5. 웰던프로젝트의 메일을 받고 한국에서 실제로 만나 MOU를 맺으셨는데요, <Well Done Mathematics!>를 보신 소감은 어떠셨나요? You have received mail from Well Done Project(WDP) and signed the MOU yourself. Tell me what you think about the book <Well Done Mathematics!>.
It’s a wonderful book because of its good pedagogical approach that is ease of use by any child in Africa. This book will certainly bring joy and interest to the young pupils especially in the African rural areas.
6. <Well Done Mathematics!>가 아프리카 교육에 긍정적인 효과를 가져올 수 있을까요? 혹시 부정적인 효과가 나타난다면 해결할 방법은 있을지요? 영어와 수학 이외에는 어떤 과목이 유용할까요? Do you think <Well Done Mathematics!> can have an optimistic effect on African education? If it has a negative effect, is there a way to solve the problem? Tell me what other subjects or contents beside English and Math would be useful if published.
제가 이 프로젝트와 협력하기로 마음먹고 노력을 기울이는 것은 웰던 산수교과서가 아프리카 국가들의 실정에 적합하기 때문입니다. 또 수학 외에 과학교과서도 나온다면 좋을 것 같습니다.
I decided to join my efforts to this project because I have the feeling that is a good and relevant one for our countries. There is no doubt about that. Other books like Science are also welcome to envisage.

7. 웰던프로젝트에서는 한국의 산수 교과서 제작에 참여하고 계신 현직 선생님들과 함께 아프리카 교사들이 <Well Done Mathematics!>를 보다 쉽게 사용할 수 있는 산수교과서 지침서를 제작 중입니다. 이 지침서가 효과적으로 배포 및 사용될 수 있는 방법이 있을까요? We are also making a guidebook for African teachers made by Korean teachers who are involved in teaching and making Korean educational texts used in school. Is there any way it could be effectively distributed and used?
물론이지요. 교사들은 보다 나은 수업을 하는데 도움을 줄 수 있는 것들을 필요로 하고 그러한 지침서를 환영합니다. 특히 교육자료가 부족한 시골지역의 교사들에게 큰 도움이 될 것이라 생각합니다. Ganndal 출판사 또한 기니 국립교육원의 전문가와 함께 교사용 일반 지침서를 준비하고 있습니다. 만약 필요하다면 웰던 산수교과서를 보충하기 위한 협력 또한 가능할 것입니다.
Of course. Everything that can help teachers to better perform their job is a necessity and such kind of guidebook is welcome if adapted to the African context. I can tell you that my publishing company “Editions Ganndal” is working currently with the specialist from the National Pedagogical Institute of Guinea to prepare a standard guidebook to help needy teachers, especially in rural areas where the is a real scarcity of pedagogical documents. If need be, in a near future we could, to complement the Math book, join our efforts to this end too.
8. 웰던프로젝트와 또다른 프로젝트를 진행하는 것에 대해 어떻게 생각하시나요? 사실 웰던프로젝트는 예산이 부족하고, 거의 모든 책 등의 판매 수익, 후원금이 책 제작에 사용되는 구조라 지속되기 어려운 위기에 처해있습니다. 공익을 목표로 하면서도 수익을 낼 수 있는 방법은 없을까요?
올해 서울에서 양해각서를 체결할 당시부터 저는 웰던프로젝트와 함께 사업을 할 의지를 분명히 했습니다. 우리에게 남은 과제는 아프리카를 대상으로 한 적합한 교육도서를 출판하고 판매하는데 성공하는 것입니다. 저는 실현 가능하다 보며, 웰던프로젝트는 공공의 이익과 수익 두 가지 모두 이뤄낼 수 있을 것이라 생각합니다. 그러기 위해서 상호간 서로에게 이익이 되는 좋은 거래를 성사시켜야 할 것 입니다. 충분히 가능합니다.
By signing an MOU with WDP earlier this year in Seoul, I obviously demonstrated a willingness to do business with it. All the challenge is to succeed in publishing and selling relevant educational books for the target audience in Africa. I think it is feasible and by this way WDP can make profit while keeping its public interest. To do so, we have to make a good business deal, mutually benefiting to both parties. It is feasible.

9. 현재 기니를 포함한 서아프리카 지역의 교육에 대해서 어떻게 생각하시나요? 교육의 발전을 위해 가장 중요하게 생각하시는 것은 무엇인지요? What do you think about the current education in West African countries including Guinea? What do you think is of the utmost importance for the educational development?
서아프리카지역의 교육제도는 느리지만 확실히 발전하고 있습니다. 해마다 내/외적인 성과를 내고 있고, 더 많은 학생들이 교육의 혜택을 받고 있습니다. 그렇지만 교육의 질적 수준은 재원과 학습자료(특히 교과서)부족 등의 문제로 인해 여전히 갈 길이 멉니다. 모든 학생들에게 필요한 교과서를 보급하기 위해 이 문제는 시급히 해결되어야 할 것이고 <Well Done Mathematics!>가 프랑스어판으로 나온다면 이 목표에 상당부분 기여할 수 있을 것입니다.
The educational systems in the sub-region are evolving, yet a bit slowly but firmly. This means that both internal and external outcomes are growing year to year and more children are getting access to schooling. However the quality education conditions are not yet met because of lack of sufficient funding and insufficient learning materials available in the hands of students, especially textbooks. This is one seems to me very urgent to be addressed in order to provide required textbooks to all students, and the title “Well Done Mathematics” could significantly contribute to this goal if made available in the new French version.
10. 아프리카 교육의 전망에 대한 생각은 어떠신지요? 앞으로 다가올 변화들을 어떻게 받아들이게 될까요? What do you think is the prospect for the African education field? How will you adapt to the upcoming changes?
현대사회의 일원으로써 아프리카 또한 글로벌 교육개발의 트렌드를 따라야 한다고 생각합니다. 여전히 극복해야 할 난관들이 남아있지만 유엔새천년개발목표(MDGs)의 달성을 위해 각국 정부와 파트너들은 많은 노력을 하고 있습니다.
African education systems must adapt and follow the global trends of educational development, there is no other choice if we can want to be part of this modern world. And a lot of efforts are being made both by governments and their development partners in order to achieve everywhere the millennium development goals even if there are still number of challenges to overcome.
11. 많은 아이들이 학비나 책값을 낼 형편이 되지 않고 도시와 농촌간의 격차 또한 존재합니다. 평등한 교육기회를 위한 해결책이 있을까요? There are many children who cannot afford to go to the school or buy books. There are gaps between cities and villages as well. Is there a way to solve the inequality of educational opportunity and help those children?
형평성과 거버넌스의 문제일 것 같습니다. 만약 정부가 국가의 모든 분야에 있어 형평성 있는 개발을 위해 올바르게 노력한다면 남학생 여학생 간의 격차도 줄어들 것이고 도시와 농촌간 격차 또한 해결될 것입니다. 다시 한번 상기시키자면 보편적 교육은 모든 아프리카 국가들에서 하나의 권리로 인정된 사항입니다.
It just is a matter of equity and good governance. If governments put the right effort in developing all the sectors in the countries without segregation or favoritism, it will be possible to reduce significantly the gap between girls and boys education as well as the one between rural and urban areas. But, to be recalled, universal education is a right recognized by all African countries and for all children.
12. 인프라가 상대적으로 취약한 아프리카 내에서의 인터넷과 모바일 기기를 통한 교육에 관한 논의가 있는데요, 출판업자의 입장에서 이것이 실용적이고 현실적인 아이디어라고 생각하시나요?
비현실적이라고 생각하지는 않습니다. 목적을 달성하기 위한 전략에 전적으로 달려있다고 생각합니다. 지역 토착언어로 기기들을 사용할 수 있다면 아이들의 교육 과정을 강화할 수 있는 강력한 수단이 될 수 있을 것입니다. 출판업자의 입장에서 고심해볼 만한 좋은 도전이 될 것 같습니다.
I do not it is unrealistic, all depends on the strategies and the means dedicated to such an objective. Moreover, if the use of such devices is based on the local languages, the children mother tongues, this would be a strong mean to strengthen the learning process to the benefit of all children. For me, as an educational publisher, this appears to be a good challenge to address quickly.

13. 서아프리카에서 에볼라가 상당히 큰 이슈인데요, 기니의 상황은 어떤가요? 아프리카 아이들의 교육과 건강에는 어떤 영향을 미쳤나요? Ebola is a big issue in West Africa at the moment. How is the situation in Guinea? How did it affect children's life and education in Africa?
현재 기니를 포함한 서아프리카에서 에볼라 사태는 굉장히 큰 문제이고 전 세계의 걱정거리 입니다만, 많은 선진국들과 국제 NGO, 보건단체의 지원으로 강력히 대응을 하는 중이고 단계적으로 통제되고 있습니다. 에볼라로 인해 많은 지역의 학교들이 오래도록 문을 닫고 있어 해당 지역 아이들이 영향을 받고 있습니다.
Of course today the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, including Guinea, is a big medical challenge and a concern for the whole world. But, given the strong riposte that is given in cooperation with many developed countries, international NGO, and Health Organizations, the disease is progressively being defeated in the affected zones.
14. 디자이너들이 에볼라 확산 방지를 위해 할 수 있는 일이 있을까요? Is there anything we can do to prevent and stop Ebola as designers? (ex_Things like making posters for prevention)
디자이너들이 에볼라 퇴치를 위해 할 수 있는, 해주셔야만 하는 많은 일들이 있습니다. 학생들과 그 가족들을 위한 에볼라 관련 보건교육 자료들을 만든다던가 말이지요. 이쪽 방면으로 많은 노력들이 있었겠지만 아직 충분치 않아 보입니다.
No doubt that there are a lot of things that designers can/must do to help stopping Ebola and provide educational and sensitization materials to students and their families. Many efforts are done in this way but it is not yet enough to my eyes.

Final words would be to thank you very much for the interest shown to help African countries to solve the recurrent problem of instructional materials scarcity. WDP must continue its efforts in that way in collaboration with African partners and Korean supporters that I would like to encourage for help and support in an efficient way, for now, and for the future.

Hello everyone, my name is Ivo (이부), I'm a 26 year old Portuguese guythat loves to cook, dance and share life with my friends, I love studying Korean, even tho it's hard and I'm doing it by myself,
it's a wonderful language and people. For this great project I had help from afew friends, to name a few, Lucas, Sónia, Nando and I have to make aspecial thank you to Mr. S; Mr. B and Mr. M; they were kind enough topose for us and participate in this great cause, you wouldn't know but,it was actually quite hard to get people to participate up on thestreets, that's why there are not so many people in it :)

안녕하세요- 저는 요리와 춤, 친구들과 함께 어울리는 것을 좋아하는 26살 포르투갈 청년 이부라고 합니다.
한국어를 공부하는 것도 좋아합니다. 어렵긴 하지만, 멋진 언어라고 생각해요. 한국인들도 멋지고요.

Portugal is located on the South-western end of Europe, it's avery sunny and pleasant place with loads of beaches and lots ofculture, there are people from all over the world but, especially fromAfrica.
You, see, the Portuguese had many colonies during the years,one of those was Mozambique, that's right, Mozambique official languageis Portuguese.
포르투갈은 유럽의 서남쪽에 위치한 나라입니다. 많은 해변과 풍부한 문화를 가진, 햇살이 넘치고 유쾌한 나라에요. 이곳에는 세계 곳곳에서 온 사람들로 가득한데, 특히 아프리카에서 온 사람들이 많답니다. 이는 예전에 포르투갈이 여러 곳에 식민지를 거느렸기 때문이죠. 그 중의 한 나라가 바로 모잠비크입니다. 그래서 모잠비크에서는 포르투갈어를 공식언어로 사용하고 있구요.
When they secured Independence from Portugal, back in 1975, lots ofold and young Mozambicans came to Portugal, we actually share a lot ofthings for example, our cultures, sometimes we can't even distinguish what's African in general and what's originally Portuguese. I rememberI was only of the only white guys back in elementary school, it was awonderful experience and I have to thank my mother and father (she wasactually one of the teachers on that school), that always encouraged multicultural behaviors, friendships and always with a open heart andmind to our fellow Africans that, nowadays are mostly Luso-Africans.
1975년, 포르투갈로부터 독립할때 수 많은 모잠비크인들이 포르투갈로 건너왔습니다.
우리는 문화 등 여러가지 것들을 공유하고 있어요. 그래서 가끔은 누가 포르투갈 토박이인지,
누가 아프리카에서 건너온 사람인지 구분하기 힘들 정도이죠. 제가 초등학교 학생일때 저희 학교에는 백인이
저밖에 없던 적도 있었답니다. 정말 좋은 경험이었다고 생각해요. 저에게 다양한 문화와 친구들에 익숙하도록
만들어 주었고, 언제나 열린 마음으로 아프리카 친구들(요즘에는 남아프리카 출신들이 대부분이에요)을 대하도록 만들어 주었으니까요. 부모님께 감사할 따름입니다. (어머니는 사실 그 학교의 선생님이기도 했답니다. :)
This school was located on a zone called "Quinta da Princesa"; thisplace is on the middle of a small forest where there was an old palace.The people from this area are usually quite poor and live in small apartments that are, in the most part subsidized by the local government. Even though there’s water and electricity you can see andfeel poverty. This kind of places is actually quite common all overPortugal but especially near Lisbon (Portugal’s capital) and my zone. Places like (projects) this are usually the living grounds forthousands of Africans (usually from Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Guinea) and other minorities like gypsies and eastern Europeans (fromthe Ukraine, Romania, Russia etc). As I mentioned this are places with very poor environments, unfortunately most people on this sort ofconditions live TO SURVIVE.
그 학교는 "Quinta da Princesa"라는 지역에 있었어요. 오래 된 성이 있는 작은 숲 속에 위치한 지역이었죠.
주민들은 대부분 가난해서 작은 아파트에 사는, 정부로부터 보조금을 받는 사람들이었습니다.
그곳에는 수도도 있고 전기도 있었지만, 그래도 어쩔 수 없는 가난함이 느껴지는 곳이었어요.
사실 포르투갈에는 이런 곳들이 많은데, 특히 수도인 리스본과 저희 동네에 많죠. 이런 곳들에는 보통 아프리카
출신이나 (보통 앙골라, 모잠비크, 카보 베르데, 기니), 집시, 또는 동유럽 출신 (우크라이나, 루마니아, 러시아 등)
주민들이 많이 거주합니다. 이러한 지역들은 환경이 열악하고 대부분의 주민들은 말그대로 '생존하기 위해' 살아가는 사람들이 많답니다.
Surrounded by all of this it was natural for me to actually have a lot of African friends and get along pretty well with the cultures.
하지만 이곳에서 자란덕에 저는 자연스럽게 많은 아프리카 친구들을 만나게 되었고, 그들의 문화와도 잘 어울릴 수 있었어요.
Two funny facts, Lucas (as well as Nando), the guy you see on the photos with me is actually part from Mozambique, his father was born there, even though he is White his Grandmother is part from Mozambique and part from India. Did I say he is a really good dancer? Well, as for the other fact, a great part of my family also lived and has a special connection with/in Africa for a number of Years. This is actually quite normal for the previous generation here in Portugal, you see, we had a big colonial war and lots of Portuguese ended up staying there with their new families after the war. My father also fought in the war (Angola), and he ended up bringing home my half-sister, so, I guess that, in this strange and indirect manner, I also have Africa in me. :)
재미있는 사실 두가지,
사진 오른쪽에 있는 제 친구 루카스는 백인이지만 약간은 모잠비크인이에요. 할아버지는 모잠비크에서 태어났고, 할머지는 모잠비크와 인도계 혼혈이시죠.
저희 가족도 대대로 아프리카와 인연이 많아요. 사실 저희 이전 세대의 포르투갈에서는 흔한일이죠.
포르투갈은 큰 식민 전쟁을 치뤘는데, 전쟁 후 많은 사람들이 그 지역들에 새로운 가족을 만들어 정착해 살았거든요. 저희 아버지도 앙골라 전쟁에 참전하셨는데, 그때 저의 이복 여동생을 데려오셨답니다.
그래서... 직접적이지는 않지만, 어떻게 보면 저도 제 안에 아프리카의 요소를 가지고 있다고 할 수 있겠네요 :)
So,with all this comes our concept, I just wanted to share that Africa is Portugal and Portugal is Africa, be it white or black,it doesn't matter. That's why I chose the transparency factor on my work. I had this idea when I was looking for something to represent Africa.
그리고 바로 이러한 것들이 저희 포스터의 컨셉이 되었어요. '아프리카 = 포르투갈, 포르투갈=아프리카' 라는 것을 표현하고 싶었죠. 흑인이든 백인이든 상관없이 말이에요. 그래서 아프리카 지도를 뚫어서 투명하게 만든거에요. (* 아프리카 지도를 통해 보이는 포르투갈을 뜻하는게 아닐까 싶습니다)
이 아이디어는 아프리카 이미지를 나타낼 것을 찾고 있을 때에 떠오른 것이랍니다.
Theconcept is quite simple, I wanted a hole were Africa was on the sign,for that I needed some support so I bought some K-line which is quiteused in Architecture models (Lucas is actually an Architecture major,thank you so much for everything :)). We cut a hole with the same size on it and glued the sign photo pieces on it. We finished it with somecoats of black and the work was done. It was then time for the photoshoot, we had some troubles with our photos but, well, this is the endresult, It came out kinda like we wanted. I hope everyone enjoys it.
포스터 컨셉은 간단합니다. 아프리카 지도를 뻥 뚫리게 만들고 싶었어요. 이를 위해서 건축 시안을 만들때 쓰이는 K-line이라는 재료들을 구입했어요. (루카스는 건축학도에요. 여러모로 고마워! :) 우리는 포스터 위의 아프리카 지도에 구멍을 낸 뒤 풀로 포스터 조각들을 K-line위에 붙인 뒤 약간의 코팅을 입히고 작업을 끝냈습니다. 그리고 나서 촬영에 들어갔어요. 이때 약간의 문제가 있었지만 (* 원래 사진을 촬영해 주기로 했던 포토그래퍼의 친구가 납치되었다가 풀려나는 사건이 있었다고 합니다) 글쎄요, 어쨌든 잘 마무리 되었고, 우리가 원하던 이미지를 얻은 것 같습니다. 모두들 즐겁게 봐주셨으면 좋겠어요.
As forthe extra side project I made there, it was actually made with theleftovers from the cuts we did, the K-line was bigger than we needed so,we just made a frame with it. This actually has a lot of meaning, thefirst one is obvious, it’s the usage of old things to make new ones,nothing is wasted. White represents the purity of Africa, the nature,the mother land of many nations. It also represents Africa’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s held “by a wire” in this case, lack of water andravaging wars and, although it moves with the “winds”of constant changeit stays strong and “framed” in the world panorama.
보내 준 포스터 외에도 우리는 남은 재료들을 가지고 다른 것도 만들어 보았어요. K-line이 우리가 필요한 분량보다 컸거든요. 그래서 남은 아프리카 대륙 부분과 합쳐서 액자처럼 만들어 보았습니다. 여기에는 여러가지 의미가 있어요. 먼저, '원래 가지고 있는 것을 사용하여 새로운 것을 만들자, 버릴것은 하나도 없다'라는 걸 표현하고 싶었습니다.
그리고 하얀색은 아프리카의 순수성, 자연, 그리고 어머니 대륙이라는 것을 나타냅니다. 또 아프리카의 강함, 그리고 약함을 나타내기도 하구요.와이어로 연결된 것은 '식수 부족'과 전쟁으로 황폐화된 모습을 나타내는 겁니다. 세상이라는 액자 속에서 와이어에 매달려 바람에 끊임없이 움직이지만, 그래도 아프리카는 강하게 이겨내고 있죠.
I just wanted to show a few good locations and shots as well as some of the wastes and other problems we also have here that, well, end up being reflected all over the world, wherever you go around the planet you will find large amounts of waste, be it food, water or lost opportunities to help others.
I had many ideas but, I didn't have enough space to share them all, so, this idea came to mind, why not use the background, the landscapeas the filler?
사실 사진들에서는 우리 또한 가지고 있는 쓰레기 등의 문제들을, 그리고 경치가 좋은 곳들을 함께 보여주고 싶었어요.
세상 어디를 가도 이런 문제들은 있기 마련이고, 지구 어디를 가도 사람들을 구할 수 있는 물, 음식이 될 수도 있었던 어마어마한 양의 쓰레기들을 발견할 수 있죠.
이렇게 아이디어는 많았는데 그것들을 모두 표현할 장소들이 부족했어요^^;
그래서 이렇게 생각해 봤어요. '그럼 주변에 볼 수 있는 풍경들을 이용해서 아프리카를 채우면 어떨까'라고.
모두들 말로는 챙피하다, 부끄럽다며 쑥스러워했지만
열심히 참여해 주었습니다. :)

グローバル社会という、世界を一つに見るということが当たり前になった今、未だに他に目を向ける余裕すらない人がいるということを忘れてはいけないと思います。しかし、余裕がないから文化が自分たちより発達していないなど哀れみの目を向けることは差別と違いはないと思います。同じ血が通っている人間であり、一人一人に笑顔がある。それは先進国だろうと発展途上国だろうと同じなはずです。見下した目で見るのではなく、平等なのだから困った人たちを助けるということが一番重要なんだと思います。世界をより良くするために、これからは人と人の助け合いをテーマに掲げるのがキーポイントのような気がします。
'글로벌 사회'라 하는, 세계를 하나로 보는 것이 당연하게 여겨지는 요즘이지만 아직도 바깥 세상에 눈을 돌릴 여유조차 없는 사람들도 많다는 사실을 잊어서는 안된다고 생각해요. 그렇지만 '그들은 가난하니까 우리보다 문화가 뒤떨어져 있는 거야'라며 그들에게 동정의 눈길을 보내는 것 또한 차별과 다르지 않다고 생각합니다. 우리는 모두 똑같이 피가 흐르는, 한사람 한사람 모두 웃는 얼굴을 갖고 있는 '인간'이니까요 .
이는 선진국이든 개발도상국이든 다르지 않습니다.
업신여기는 눈으로 보는게 아닌, 우리는 평등하니까 어려움에 처한 사람을 돕는 거야 라는 생각이
가장 중요하다고 생각해요.
좀 더 좋은 세상을 만들기 위해, 앞으로 이런 캠페인들에서는 사람과 사람의 '서로 도움'이
핵심 주제가 되어야 하지 않을까 하고 생각해 봅니다.
'Global society' is a common term now, describing the world as one. However, there are still many people who cannot afford to see what's going on around them..Nonetheless, it is ethnocentric discrimination to say like, 'their culture is left behind because they are poor.' After all, we are all 'human,' who are able to show the expression of real happiness.
What is important, I think, is the thought that we should help people in need, since we are all equal.
To make a better world, campaigns like this one should have their main motif in 'helping each other' in interpersonal equivalent as well, I think.
